Ezra 8:21-23

Fasting and Prayer for Protection

21 cThen I proclaimed a fast there, at the river dAhava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, eto seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods. 22For I was ashamed to ask the king for a band of soldiers and horsemen to protect us against the enemy on our way, since we had told the king, f“The hand of our God is for good on gall who seek him, and the power of his wrath is against all who forsake him.” 23So we fasted and implored our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty.

1Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2Arise, go to xNineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” 3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now yNineveh was an exceedingly great city,
Hebrew  a great city to God
three daysjourney in breadth.
Or a visit was a three days’ journey
4Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5 abAnd the people of Nineveh believed God. acThey called for a fast and adput on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

The People of Nineveh Repent

6The word reached
Or had reached
the king of Nineveh, and afhe arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, agand sat in ashes.
7And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, ah“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor aibeast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, 8but let man and ajbeast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. akLet everyone turn from his evil way and from althe violence that is in his hands. 9 amWho knows? God may turn and relent anand turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.”

10When God saw what they did, aohow they turned from their evil way, apGod relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
